The Night Before, Omicron Style

December 25th, 2021, 12:09am by Jake

Twas the night before Christmas, and on our group blog,
It had been silent for months, as if in a fog
WordPress still running Pyslent with due care
Only seldom we write, yet we still come & stare

Eight growing children, all snug in their beds
While visions of gadgets danced in dads’ heads
The stock market still soaring, but inflation’s up too,
It will cost a little bit more, to visit the zoo.

Chiefs beat the Chargers with exciting football,
Could the Pats win again- it’s a real free-for-all.
For spring training, it’s fifty days till it lands
Hoping this year to get the kids in the stands.

Out on the internet arose such a clatter
I sprang from the couch to see what was the matter
Turned my Apple Watch on to the Christmas Eve feed
(There’s one now with cellular? That’s just what I need!)

The internet was crazy, I’d never seen such a flurry
But I must be quick, I must be in a hurry
Then I just saw him, almost did not catch it.
It’s Rotiveo– the patron saint of gadgets!

He flew around quick, to learn of our tribe
To get presents be good, and don’t pay a bribe.
Two years into lockdown, we’re all losing our heads,
But a few short escapes, we’ve just slept in our beds.

Lucas in high school, that happened so fast,
How is middle school already gone past?
Let’s go now, the next rhyme is for Brandon,
If you want Derrick’s twin, there’s no better stand-in

Parents working remotely all over the house,
Conference calls much noisier than the lone Christmas mouse.
The vaccines are here now, and the offices beckon,
You might need that proof, to get past the check-in

Corona is crazy, it’s thrown all for a loop,
We thought we made it, then Delta… oh poop!
Now Omicron has scrambled life yet again
(Will it be over before the kids all turn ten?)

Rotiveo’s stuff is all amazing, none old,
No Foleo, Moviepass, nor ‘Galaxy Fold
Instead more iPhones, bikes, or cool gaming gear,
And an Apple Watch, to keep us off of our rear.

Joanie and Mike taking a break from their videocall,
With Adam and Emma playing, there’ll be no Zooming at all!
Kelvin & Serena will drive-in to see Spiderman,
What can that guy even do? Whatever a spider can!

Jake & Jen in their house and the rest of their crew,
Moved back into their house, it’s almost brand new!
The Sungs made it six with a four-legged friend,
Now their fun will never, ever end!

The Corona has made us all a bit nuts,
More than a dozen stuck in these ruts,
It will end some day then back to the normal,
Would be nice to go out and just be informal.

Now 16 young hands, some big and some small
How do we even keep track of it all,
25 full years since the core four first met,
Maybe one summer, the biggest gathering yet?

Rotiveo sprang to Roomba (hacked years before)
And away they went, after cleaning the floor
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,
“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!”

CueCat founder failed even bigger!

December 22nd, 2021, 7:52pm by Jake

How did I miss this one? Apparently the inventor of the CueCat moved on to bigger and better things— he tried to overthrow the government!

Guy’s in the hospital now with not-Abthrax a week after going to a conference full of vaccination skeptics. So yeah, thoughts and prayers!

Night Before Pyslentmas

December 24th, 2019, 1:26pm by Jake

Twas the night before Christmas, and on our group blog,
Logging in proved difficult, a ten-minute slog.
WordPress still running Pyslent with due care
Only seldom we write, yet we still come & stare

Eight children now, all snug in their beds
While visions of gadgets danced in dads’ heads
The stock market was soaring, the president impeached
One might wonder, could sanity ever be reached?

Chiefs and Pats won divisions, Niners right back on top
Lebron and the Lakers? Winning, almost non-stop.
Spring training was just fifty, long long days away
The Raiders in Oakland? They’ll never stay.

He saw some cruise to Alaska, I guess that’s a thing,
Then Tiffany came home for some dance and to sing.

Lucas still watching and treading the boards
Jordan’s singing on stage (without any words),
The Lego king of Brookline still building strong,
When Adam’s not reading, he’s joking along.

Evan and Brandon and their dad Derrick, too
Visited Disneyland, it was probably a zoo.
Jason’s not crawling, but starting to scoot,
He really needs to find, the most easiest route.

Emma is crafting things from a big catalog,
Maybe one will come to life, she’ll have her own dog!
Brandon is crafting his own kind of thing,
A gaming PC, with a heatsink for fast ping.

Rotiveo’s stuff is all amazing, none old,
No Foleo, Moviepass, nor ‘Galaxy Fold
Instead it’s AirPods, iPhones and more Apple gear,
Alexa does more and more, each and every year.

Joanie and Mike getting ready with presents all wrapped
With enough extra Legos, Adam and Emma would like to get trapped!
Kelvin & Serena now looking up to their boy,
The step stool in the kitchen, only the parents deploy.

The Four Jays are rocking, Hanukkah Night number three
There are even more presents, how could that be!
Jason now enjoying all the diapers, cribs & plugs
Jordan’s now a big brother, kneeling down for low hugs.

At Tahoe again, two clans will ski & have fun
Lucas might just head down, the scariest run.
Back in the lodge, the day soon comes to its end,
And Derrick walks in (that’s Evan’s best friend).

Now 16 young hands, some big and some small
How do we even keep track of it all,
Nearly 25 years since the core four first met,
Maybe next summer, the biggest gathering yet?

Rotiveo sprang to Roomba (hacked years before)
And away they went, after cleaning the floor
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,
“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!”

All Pyslent Gathering

April 23rd, 2019, 10:07pm by Jake

It’s been a long time since we were all together– 4.5 years for the adults, about 9 years since all the kids got together too. Since then, we’ve grown from 11 to 16. It would be great to all get together with all the kids in tow. Given that we’re not going on any extra trips with an infant, if it’s going to happen Summer 2019 it best be driving distance from LA. But maybe not too soon to think about Summer 2020– by then I’m sure we’ll have our traveling legs back.

The Night Before, 2018 Edition

December 24th, 2018, 4:15pm by Jake

Twas the night before Christmas, and on our website
We had an absence of posting, no comments were in sight
WordPress still running Pyslent with due care
Only seldom we write, yet we still come & stare

Seven children were nestled, all snug in their beds
While visions of gadgets danced in dads’ heads
The stock market was tanking, the government shutdown
The whole thing orchestrated by the world’s largest clown

Chiefs and Pats were still winning, Red Sox were world champs
Giants fans counting days until Spring Training camps
Lebron joined the Chargers and Rams in LA
The Raiders in Oakland? They’ll never stay.

Out on the internet arose such a clatter
I sprang from the couch to see what was the matter
Grabbed my Apple Watch, don’t drop it this time
Fixing a screen is pricey, costs more than a dime.

The internet was crazy, I’d never seen such a flurry
But I must be quick, I must be in a hurry
Then I just saw him, almost did not catch it.
It’s Rotiveo– the patron saint of gadgets!

Rotiveo wore Mobile Pants, size extra tall
And his clothes were vibrating, must be a phone call
Brought a load of gadgets, and even a game
And he whistled, and shouted, and called sites by name

“Now Netflix! Now Target! And Amazon too!
To Best Buy! To Costco! And Kickstarter woo-hoo!”
All over the web, he searched high and searched low
To find all the stuff, now it’s ready to go!

All across the Internet, Rotiveo he flew
A storm of traffic he did see in his rear view
He found the best deals, on the very best gear
It’s so cutting edge, it will still be good next year.

The net’s overflowing with really good stuff
Getting it to work might be kind of tough
With all sorts of cords and fifty kinds of plugs
(For us early adopters, we’re used to the bugs)

Rotiveo’s got the stuff to make us all gloat,
No Cable, Trump Tower, nor ‘Galaxy Note
The home gets smarter with a Ring and Nest
With Sonos One, the music you pick is always the best!

Joanie and Mike getting ready with presents all wrapped
With enough extra Legos, Adam and Emma would like to get trapped!
Kelvin & Serena still looking down to their boy,
Next year looking up to him, it will still be a joy

Jake and Jen finished Hanukah weeks in the past,
With Jordan’s 6 little friends, they all had a blast.
He said bye to diapers, cribs & plugs
He’s going to school, so now it’s little boy hugs

Brandon’s teen years started off with a bomb scare,
With Tiffany & Evan, nothing will ever be fair!
At Tahoe again, two clans will ski & have fun
Lucas might just head down the scariest run.

Happy in doggie heaven, looking down with such glee
There is Montana, merrily running free
She still sleeps and when she does she still dreams
Mostly of eating, people food I believe

Rotiveo sprang to Roomba (hacked years before)
And away they went, after cleaning the floor
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,
“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!”

Drinks in the South Bay!

Grabbing a quick bite with Dr. Sung.

More March Madness

March 17th, 2018, 9:37pm by Jake

With the spike in entry fee and diapers, I entered only once in Lance’s pool this year. And keeping to form, sometime in the first weekend I have managed to claw my way to #1. I know it won’t last, and I will end up in my traditional 6-15th place after the final. But fun while it lasts.

Last Night Before (From Here)

December 24th, 2017, 11:34pm by Jake

Twas the night before Christmas, and on our website
We had an absence of posting, no comments were in sight
WordPress is running Pyslent with due care
We may seldom write, but we still come & stare

Seven children were nestled, all snug in their beds
While visions of gadgets danced in dads’ heads
The Pats kept on winning, the Niners look like they’re back.
The Rams & Bolts are cooking, good teams we don’t lack.

Out on the internet arose such a clatter
I sprang from the couch to see what was the matter
Grabbed my Apple Watch, working so fine
Like the Apple gadgets, will age like fine wine

The internet was crazy, I’d never seen such a flurry
But I must be quick, I must be in a hurry
Then I just saw him, almost did not catch it.
It’s Rotiveo– the patron saint of gadgets!

Rotiveo wore Mobile Pants, size extra tall

Getting it to work might be kind of tough
With all sorts of cords and fifty kinds of plugs
(For us early adopters, we’re used to the bugs)

Rotiveo’s got the stuff to make us all gloat,
No Cable, Juicero, nor ‘Galaxy Note
Instead it’s Google Home and Amazon Echo,
If that Nest is listening, we’ll never know!

Joanie and Mike are extra super cold
Adam and Emma on the Disco never gets old!
Lucas on violin and climbing a roof,
Kelvin and Serena raising their prince is no goof!

Jake and Jen finished Hanukah Tuesday night,
This year with Jordan, what a festival of light.
Soon to be moving in a house all their own,
And they need it as they baby has grown!

How could Brandon be twelve and Lucas be ten?
They’ll still love their presents, all over again
Tiffany, Evan, Adam, Emma & Jordan
All seven amazing, I’ll say it again!

Happy in doggie heaven, looking down with such glee
There is Montana, merrily running free
She still sleeps and when she does she still dreams
Mostly of eating, people food I believe

Rotiveo sprang to Roomba (hacked years before)
And away they went, after cleaning the floor

First Place Madness!

March 18th, 2017, 6:28pm by Jake

I figure I better post fast before things change. Right now, I’m in first place among the 400+ entrants in Lance’s pool. Not so shabby! Picking Wisconsin over Villanova catapulted me from 20th to #1.

“TiVo Deathwatch Is Prophetic”

September 7th, 2016, 8:10pm by Mike

Today, Jake posted to following on Twitter:

(The link is to this page.)

A cursory glance shows that this site has at least 44 posts with TiVo in the title, starting with the 4th post ever on The Board. And as we all remember, my voyage into TivoLand started with a wedding present over 15 years ago (and try as I might, I can’t find the original website that announced the present, though I know it survived for many years after our wedding). It was so futuristic at the time, and a great present!

But my own TiVo deathwatch has come to an end as well. My history with the platform is well-documented here, but for the last several years, that Series 1 box has sat in the basement in a box (right beside my father-in-law’s Sony Series 1, which I was going to use for a Frankenstein reincarnation experiment that never quite worked years ago).

This weekend, both TiVo boxes, with lifetime subscriptions, found their way to a garbage bag, and will be taking their last trip to some landfill tomorrow. Farewell, old friend.
