A Very Different Night Before

December 24th, 2020, 11:37pm by Jake

Twas the night before Christmas, and on our group blog,
Logging in proved difficult, a ten-minute slog.
WordPress still running Pyslent with due care
Only seldom we write, yet we still come & stare

Eight growing children, all snug in their beds
While visions of gadgets danced in dads’ heads
The stock market still soaring, the president a crook
Joe Biden will take over, a much better look.

Chiefs keep on winning, the Pats finally suck
Chargers new home a void, that’s some kind of luck
Spring training is just fifty, long long days away
Let’s hope this year, they can actually play

Out on the internet arose such a clatter
I sprang from the couch to see what was the matter
Turned my Apple Watch on to the Christmas Eve feed
(There’s one now with cellular? That’s just what I need!)

The internet was crazy, I’d never seen such a flurry
But I must be quick, I must be in a hurry
Then I just saw him, almost did not catch it.
It’s Rotiveo– the patron saint of gadgets!

He flew around quick, to learn of our tribe
To get presents be good, and don’t pay a bribe.
We all took some road-trips, the planes took a rest,
‘cept Jordan flew to Utah, to see the rocket test.

Lucas plays Charlie Brown from anywhere with Zoom
Brandon starts High School without a home room.
Ice hockey for Adam was sadly cut short,
While Emma plays soccer, her favorite sport.

Parents working remotely all over the house,
Conference calls much noisier than the lone Christmas mouse.
Jason’s now running, jumping and more,
The next riddle to solve: how to open the door.

The IPO loot scores Tiffany a surprise in her ears,
(If I ruined it now, would there be any tears?)
Evan likes the new Switch, it’s making the rounds
While dad paints the house and fixes the grounds.

Rotiveo’s stuff is all amazing, none old,
No Foleo, Moviepass, nor ‘Galaxy Fold
Instead more iPhones, bikes, or cool gaming gear,
And an Apple Watch, to keep us off of our rear.

Joanie and Mike taking a break from their videocall,
With Adam and Emma playing, there’ll be no Zooming at all!
Can Kelvin & Serena keep up with their surfing & swimming teen,
Yeah, when watching The OC, they know every scene.

The Four Jays are rocking, still paying the rent
In one more month, a new house will be heaven sent.
The Sungs are hoping to see the best of Tahoe,
Get out of this house, and get into the snow!

The Corona has made us all a bit nuts,
More than a dozen stuck in these ruts,
But the vaccine arrives as does the new year,
That alone makes reason for very good cheer!

Now 16 young hands, some big and some small
How do we even keep track of it all,
25 full years since the core four first met,
Maybe one summer, the biggest gathering yet?

Rotiveo sprang to Roomba (hacked years before)
And away they went, after cleaning the floor
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,
“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!”

Another Night Before

December 24th, 2016, 9:50pm by Jake

Twas the night before Christmas, and on our website
We had an absence of posting, no comments were in sight
WordPress is running Pyslent with due care
We may seldom write, but we still come & stare

Seven children were nestled, all snug in their beds
While visions of gadgets danced in dads’ heads
The Pats kept on winning, the Raiders a whole bunch
The Niners go for two, they took the Rams lunch

Out on the internet arose such a clatter
I sprang from the couch to see what was the matter
Grabbed my iPad Air, still working just fine
All the Apple gadgets, aging like fine wine

The internet was crazy, I’d never seen such a flurry
But I must be quick, I must be in a hurry
Then I just saw him, almost did not catch it.
It’s Rotiveo– the patron saint of gadgets!

Rotiveo wore Mobile Pants, size extra tall
And his clothes were vibrating, must be a phone call
Brought a load of gadgets, and even a game
And he whistled, and shouted and called sites by name

“Now Netflix! Now Target! And Amazon too!
To Nordstrom’s! To Costco! To Fandango too!”
All over the web, he searched high and searched low
To find all the stuff, now it’s ready to go!

All across the internet, Rotiveo he flew
A storm of traffic he did see in his rear view
He found the best deals, on the very best gear
It’s so cutting edge, it will still be good next year.

The net’s overflowing with really good stuff
Getting it to work might be kind of tough
With all sorts of cords and fifty kinds of plugs
(For us early adopters, we’re used to the bugs)

Rotiveo’s got the stuff to make us all gloat,
No Cable, Blackberry, nor ‘Galaxy Note
Instead it’s Apple’s Watch and their brand new laptop,
Pixels, Chromebooks, GoPros that never ever stop!

Joanie and Mike remember the warm summer past
Adam and Emma will be opening presents soon, and fast!
Kelvin and Serena live in Apple’s developing shadow
Lucas getting big quicker, it’s just grow grow grow

Jake and Jen start Hanukah on this very night,
Never been so happy to start the festival of light.
In years past it had been two and now three,
Rounding out the crew is the wonderful JV

How could Lucas be nine and Brandon … eleven?
They’ll still love their presents, all over again
Tiffany, Evan, Adam & Emma know its grand
Too many toys for fourteen big & little hands.

Happy in doggie heaven, looking down with such glee
There is Montana, merrily running free
She still sleeps and when she does she still dreams
Mostly of eating, people food I believe

Rotiveo sprang to Roomba (hacked years before)
And away they went, after cleaning the floor
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,
“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!”

The Tradition Continues

December 24th, 2015, 6:36pm by Jake

Twas the night before Christmas, and on our website
We had s sprinkle of posting, comments were still light
WordPress is running Pyslent with due care
We may seldom write, but we still come & stare

Six children were nestled, all snug in their beds
While visions of gadgets danced in dads’ heads
The Pats kept on winning, the Niners not so much
Tom Brady throws footballs with a Montana-like touch

Out on the internet arose such a clatter
I sprang from the couch to see what was the matter
Grabbed my iPad Air, still working just fine
All the Apple gadgets, aging like fine wine

The internet was crazy, I’d never seen such a flurry
But I must be quick, I must be in a hurry

To Westfield! To Costco! To Fandango too!”
All over the web, he searched high and searched low
To find all the stuff, now it’s ready to go!

All across the internet, Rotiveo he flew
A storm of traffic he did see in his rear view

The net’s overflowing with really good stuff
Getting it to work might be kind of tough
With all sorts of cords and fifty kinds of plugs

Rotiveo’s got just the right thing for us all
No Cable, Blackberry, nor ‘lectronic pinball
Instead it’s Apple’s Watch and their brand new TV,
Smartphones, Chromebooks, open your eyes & you’ll see!

Joanie and Mike finished expanding their new home
Adam and Emma opening presents while living in a tropical zone
Kelvin and Serena living in Apple’s future shadow
Lucas still trying to be good don’t you know

Jake & Jen take it easy for the long weekend,
The festival of lights put their candles to an end .
Brandon & Tiffany can now fight over Evan
His first Christmas, a little slice of heaven!

How could Lucas be eight and Brandon be ten?
They’ll still love presents, all over again
Tiffany, Adam & Emma sure know Christmas is grand
Too many toys for sixty big & little hands.

Happy in doggie heaven, looking down with such glee
There is Montana, merrily running free
She still sleeps and when she does she still dreams
Mostly of eating, people food I believe

Rotiveo sprang to Roomba (hacked years before)

The T-Shirt Project

June 2nd, 2014, 12:41pm by Jake

I’ve been busy! Just started a new side project, from the school of “what the hell do I do with 200 t-shirts.” Many are sitting in a suitcase in the garage, waiting to be turned into a quilt. Then Jen suggested instead of a bulky quilt, I could create a photo book. So this weekend, I went through the 35 or so race t-shirts in my house and photographed each, front & back. And ended up tossing close to 50 total (many, many non race shirts mixed in). That still leaves dozens in the garage. Project for another day. In the end, I see a photo book showing the front of each shirt on one page, and the facing page having the back of the shirt along with the race time, or maybe some other memorable photos from that day. Similar in a way to documenting Mom’s art, but with a little less attention to detail and far smaller audience. This will probably have a print run of one.

Catalina Marathon 2014 T-Shirt

In the end, the project is as much about figuring out how to keep “stuff” manageable as it is about getting rid of “stuff.” I like keeping the old t-shirts, because it brings me back to that day, that race. But keeping them in storage, I lost that bit of serendipity. While this doesn’t help with serendipity, it makes the items a lot more accessible, even if not in wearable form. It helps of course that I have some experience photographing artwork– although shooting in shade with the shirts hung by clothespins would work nearly as well as my two flash, easel, 4 clip and tripod set up.

Quick post

May 31st, 2014, 2:23pm by Mike

In my comment on Jake’s post, I said I’d make my own quick post, so here it is!

The interesting things I might have posted about if I’d had more time recently:

  • How I’m reading Game of Thrones — if you’re watching, NO SPOILERS! I’m 65% through Book 3, which means I’m well over 2000 normal book pages into the series. But I’m reading on my Kindle Paperwhite (incredible e-reader, btw), and realized yesterday that, 600 pages into Book 3, I have no idea what the title of the book is.
  • Kids are doing swimming and tumbling classes, which is fun.
  • I bought a guitar (this one), and I’m taking guitar lessons! I can play a couple of things that you might recognize, like Wonderwall, but not very well. It’s really fun.

All for now, off to my guitar lesson!

Out on the internet arose such a clatter

I sprang from the couch to see what was the matter

Grabbed my iPad Air, cause I finally gave in

New MacBook & iPhone, Apple racking up the win

The internet was crazy, I’d never seen such a flurry

But I must be quick, I must be in a hurry

Then I just saw him, almost did not catch it.

It’s Rotiveo– the patron saint of gadgets!

And his clothes were vibrating, must be a phone call

Brought a load of gadgets, and even a game

And he whistled, and shouted and called sites by name

“Now Groupon! Now Apple! Skip Target and Best Buy

To Starbucks! To Costco! To Amazon and Fry’s”

All over the web, he searched high and searched low

To find all the stuff, now it’s ready to go!

All across the internet, Rotiveo he flew

A storm of traffic he did see in his rear view

He found the best deals, on the very best gear

Adam and Emma will have fun, no matter the weather

To Kelvin, Serena, & of course young Lucas

He sure has fun when he’s raising a ruckus.

Jake planning on Chinese Food with Jen,

Lounging around, it’s a day of Jewish Zen

Brandon & Tiffany finally have their new house

Two years in row, they happily share with a mouse!

Lucas’ is six and Brandon is eight

For all their presents, they hardly can wait

Tiffany, Adam & Emma sure know Christmas is grand

Too many toys to hold in thirty little hands.

Happy in doggie heaven, looking down with such glee

Five children were nestled, all snug in their beds
While visions of gadgets danced in dads’ heads
The Pats comeback worked, while the Niners fell way short
Blake Griffin and Chris Paul now rule the court

I sprang from the couch to see what was the matter
Grabbed my MacBook Air, no way it’s a fad?
Checked Twitter & email, this Mac’s stuff not bad

The internet was crazy, I’d never seen such a flurry
But I must be quick, I must be in a hurry

You’ll soon take great photos, and that ain’t no lie

The Dimiccos, spending another Christmas together
There’ll be much joy on a run, just ignore at the weather
To Kelvin, Serena, Montana & Lucas
Happily running all around, don’t fall on your tucus.

Jake and Olivia off to Tucson,
New people to meet, there will be lots of fun in the sun
Derrick, Emily, Brandon & Tiffany
Finally settled down, a permanent home for the family

Lucas’ sixth & Brandon’s eight Christmas Eve
Montana always dreaming, of food I believe
Tiffany, Adam & Emma now know that Christmas is grand

Discovery Kingdom with the boys

June 25th, 2012, 3:29am by Kelvin

Derrick and Emily had some furniture shopping to do, so we took Brandon with us to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo. Got a late start, but we didn’t care too much because we were all using season passes. By 2 o’clock, we were there watching the dolphin and killer whale shows, riding roller coasters, checking out animals from the African Savannah, and eating Dipping Dots.

Cooling down.

On Lucas’s favorite roller coaster, Cobra.

No one’s looking at the camera!

Massive water play area.

One of them is named Brandon.
