Notifications

August 5th, 2015, 7:01pm by Kelvin

So, how do you all organize and manage your notifications on your phones? For me, I have 2 classes of notifications: ones that I want to interrupt me with a sound alert and/or a vibration, and ones that accrue silently on my lock screen and notification shade. The ones that alert me are generally those that I would want to at upon right away: phone calls, text messages, calendar alerts, and Google Now alerts.  The other notifications I use to give me a quick overview of the things that had happened since the last time I checked my phone. I will glance at my lockscreen to check these when I have down time: things like Giants score changes, emails received, Twitter/Facebook notifications, a bunch others.

I’ve been thinking about this system a lot since getting an Apple Watch– I mirror all these notifications there, pretty much with the same 2-tier system, but of course, I am able to discreetly check my watch much more often than my phone, so I think I tend to be distracted more often by the second class notifications. Not sure if I like that.

Step Tracking with iPhone

May 1st, 2015, 2:58am by Kelvin

I just read Mike’s post on his Jawbone Up2, and I totally agree with his assessment– gamifying activity tracking provides a huge incentive. I’ve been using the built in sensors on my iPhone 6 to track daily steps and stairs for a while, and it affects where I choose to park, where I go to lunch, etc. Not surprisingly though, Apple doesn’t seem to play nicely with marchup.io, but here’s how I stood in the past week. The Apple Watch adds another wrinkle because it factors in HR monitoring to compute calories burned. Obviously a more extensive review of that device warrants its own forthcoming post!

I didn’t mean to splinter the conversation, but I didn’t see a way to add an image to a comment. Also I wanted to try out the new Word Press– pretty slick!

Practically the night before Pyslentmas

December 25th, 2014, 10:56am by Jake

Twas the night before Christmas, and on our website

All had stopped posting, and comments were light

WordPress still running Pyslent with due care

We may seldom post, but we still come & stare

Five children were nestled, all snug in their beds

While visions of gadgets danced in dads’ heads

The Pats kept on winning, the Niners not so much

tom Brady throws footballs with a Montana-like touch

Out on the internet arose such a clatter

I sprang from the couch to see what was the matter

Grabbed my iPad Air, still working just fine

All the Apple gadgets, aging like fine wine

The internet was crazy, I’d never seen such a flurry

But I must be quick, I must be in a hurry

Then I just saw him, almost did not catch it.

It’s Rotiveo– the patron saint of gadgets!

Rotiveo wore Mobile Pants, size extra tall

And his clothes were vibrating, must be a phone call

Brought a load of gadgets, and even a game

And he whistled, and shouted and called sites by name

“Now Groupon! Now Williams! And Sonoma too!

To Geary’s! To Costco! online the Interview!”

All over the web, he searched high and searched low

To find all the stuff, now it’s ready to go!

All across the internet, Rotiveo he flew

A storm of traffic he did see in his rear view

He found the best deals, on the very best gear

It’s so cutting edge, it will still be good next year.

The net’s overflowing with really good stuff

Getting it to work might be kind of tough

With all sorts of cords and fifty kinds of plugs

(For us early adopters, we’re used to the bugs)

Rotiveo’s got just the right thing for us all

No Cable, Blackberry, nor ‘lectronic pinball

Instead it’s FireTV and Galaxy S5,

Smartphones, Chromebooks, Teslas and shiny new knives!

Joanie and Mike happily creating their new home

Adam and Emma opening presents while living in a snow dome

Kelvin and Serena packed to travel so far

Hong Kong with family, I bet Lucas is the star

Jake watching snow fall in Utah with Jen,

Happily married, three months Of virtual heaven.

Brandon & Tiffany waiting for a third sibling

Two not much longer, waiting to see what santa will bring !

Lucas’ is seven and Brandon is nine

For all their presents, they Sure will be fine

Tiffany, Adam & Emma sure know Christmas is grand

Too many toys to hold in thirty little hands.

Happy in doggie heaven, looking down with such glee

There is Montana, so happily running free

She still sleeps and when she does she still dreams

Mostly of eating, people food I believe

Rotiveo sprang to Roomba (hacked years before)

And away they went, after cleaning the floor

But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,

“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!”

Trying out The iPhone WordPress app

December 15th, 2013, 10:34am by Kelvin

Now optimized for iOS7. Speaking of iOS7, what do you all think of it? I like the look. And the Back swipe (in safari, settings, mail, etc). It’s pretty jarring when you fire up an app that has not adopted the iOS7 aesthetic, and it’s using the old keyboard, the thick gradient header bars, linen textures, etc. Same too with the mobile version of the Board– it’s just feels like a blast from the past. It kinda suits the Board though 🙂

iPhone 5S vs 5C

November 5th, 2013, 8:41pm by Kelvin

Over the past few months, my Sprint family plan, consisting of my brother, Serena and Jake, has been making a mass exodus that has finally culminated in us moving to AT&T as of this month. Compared to Sprint, we have a slightly more expensive plan– we are now sharing 6 GB of data across our 3 phones for $59 apiece. But we are probably getting our money’s worth with the higher data speeds and more reliable coverage.

Phone-wise, Serena and Jake have gotten subsidized 5S’s under contract, and I am currently using a green 5c without contract. I’ve been pretty happy with my 5C so far, and am starting to wonder if it is worth it to pay $200 to upgrade to a 5S. The fingerprint sensor on the 5S is fun but unnecessary, and the only appreciable difference seems to be the camera. Jake, have you had a chance to put it through the paces yet? I think the slo mo camera is fun, but that true tone flash is really the only thing that is potentially useful.

I do tend to think that it’s a waste to be paying full price on service fees without making the carrier pay off a subsidized phone. What would you do if you had an upgrade but was not super impressed by the current phone? Would you wait a year off contract?
