Twas #9

December 24th, 2013, 6:15pm by Jake

Twas the night before Christmas, and on our website

All had stopped posting, and comments were light

WordPress still running Pyslent with due care

We may seldom post, but we still come & stare

Five children were nestled, all snug in their beds

While visions of gadgets danced in dads’ heads

The Pats kept on winning, the Chiefs for a change

Blake Griffin, he is killer, from very short range

Out on the internet arose such a clatter

I sprang from the couch to see what was the matter

Grabbed my iPad Air, cause I finally gave in

New MacBook & iPhone, Apple racking up the win

The internet was crazy, I’d never seen such a flurry

But I must be quick, I must be in a hurry

Then I just saw him, almost did not catch it.

It’s Rotiveo– the patron saint of gadgets!

Rotiveo wore Mobile Pants, size extra tall

And his clothes were vibrating, must be a phone call

Brought a load of gadgets, and even a game

And he whistled, and shouted and called sites by name

“Now Groupon! Now Apple! Skip Target and Best Buy

To Starbucks! To Costco! To Amazon and Fry’s”

All over the web, he searched high and searched low

To find all the stuff, now it’s ready to go!

All across the internet, Rotiveo he flew

A storm of traffic he did see in his rear view

He found the best deals, on the very best gear

It’s so cutting edge, it will still be good next year.

The net’s overflowing with really good stuff

Getting it to work might be kind of tough

With all sorts of cords and fifty kinds of plugs

(For us early adopters, we’re used to the bugs)

Rotiveo’s got just the right thing for us all

No Smartwatch, Blackberry, nor ‘lectronic pinball

Instead it’s the new iPad and PS4,

Smartphones, Chromebooks, Teslas and more!

The Dimiccos, spending another Christmas together

Adam and Emma will have fun, no matter the weather

To Kelvin, Serena, & of course young Lucas

He sure has fun when he’s raising a ruckus.

Jake planning on Chinese Food with Jen,

Lounging around, it’s a day of Jewish Zen

Brandon & Tiffany finally have their new house

Two years in row, they happily share with a mouse!

Lucas’ is six and Brandon is eight

For all their presents, they hardly can wait

Tiffany, Adam & Emma sure know Christmas is grand

Too many toys to hold in thirty little hands.

Happy in doggie heaven, looking down with such glee

There is Montana, so happily running free

She still sleeps and when she does she still dreams

Mostly of eating, people food I believe

Rotiveo sprang to Roomba (hacked years before)

And away they went, after cleaning the floor

But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,

“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!”

Chichen Itza & Taking Flickr Embeds for a spin

December 18th, 2013, 7:17pm by Jake

Back from Mexico late Sunday, no time to go through the dozens (shockingly not thousands) on my regular camera. But here’s a shot from the iPhone, really a perfect sky to get this, from blue to gray.

Going to have to test this w/ a non-pano. Nothing from Mexico right now, here’s the Icebox calendar in the wild.

And another, trying to figure out how Flickr decided which features to include based on image dimensions.

Trying out The iPhone WordPress app

Now optimized for iOS7. Speaking of iOS7, what do you all think of it? I like the look. And the Back swipe (in safari, settings, mail, etc). It’s pretty jarring when you fire up an app that has not adopted the iOS7 aesthetic, and it’s using the old keyboard, the thick gradient header bars, linen textures, etc. Same too with the mobile version of the Board– it’s just feels like a blast from the past. It kinda suits the Board though 🙂

iPhone 5S vs 5C

Over the past few months, my Sprint family plan, consisting of my brother, Serena and Jake, has been making a mass exodus that has finally culminated in us moving to AT&T as of this month. Compared to Sprint, we have a slightly more expensive plan– we are now sharing 6 GB of data across our 3 phones for $59 apiece. But we are probably getting our money’s worth with the higher data speeds and more reliable coverage.

Phone-wise, Serena and Jake have gotten subsidized 5S’s under contract, and I am currently using a green 5c without contract. I’ve been pretty happy with my 5C so far, and am starting to wonder if it is worth it to pay $200 to upgrade to a 5S. The fingerprint sensor on the 5S is fun but unnecessary, and the only appreciable difference seems to be the camera. Jake, have you had a chance to put it through the paces yet? I think the slo mo camera is fun, but that true tone flash is really the only thing that is potentially useful.

I do tend to think that it’s a waste to be paying full price on service fees without making the carrier pay off a subsidized phone. What would you do if you had an upgrade but was not super impressed by the current phone? Would you wait a year off contract?

LA Triathlon!

September 29th, 2013, 8:23pm by Jake

I actually owe Pyslent about 4 race reports (Born to Run 50K, Culver City 5K, Conquer the Bridge Half Marathon, Pacific Coast Sprint Tri & a 16 mile R/T run up & down a 4000 foot climb. LA Triathlon? I killed it.

My swim is what it is, 42:20 for 1500m. Transitions still suck, 6:20 getting on the bike. Then I cruised, 40km (25 miles) in 1:21:30. Second half was faster than the first. Another slow transition (4:28), then the run. I had to hold myself back to hold a decent pace. Then my mile splits. Get this! 8:50, 9:02, 7:43, 8:37, 8:44 and the last mile in a ridiculous (for me) 7:03. I’ve only ever run 1 race mile that fast, and it included a 300 foot downhill. I was flying! Final time 3:05:19! That’s a full 25 minutes faster than my 2 year old previous Olympic race.  Yeah, I kicked ass at the LA Triathlon!

Solar Power

While reading this article, saw an option to embed it on an external website. Let’s see how it works.

Cost Of Solar Set To Plummet With New 44.7% Efficiency Record (via Clean Technica)

A research team in Europe has achieved a world record-setting solar conversion efficiency of 44.7 percent, and assuming that higher efficiency translates into lower costs, it’s yet another indicator that we’re only at the beginning of a long, steep…
