Staycation

February 25th, 2011, 8:50pm by Kelvin

We took a “trip” last weekend to SF and spent the night at the Fairmont just for the long weekend. It was fun reliving all the memories of our wedding… I can almost picture your little cartoon heads in this photo! And of course, Lucas is learning to appreciate living the high life. Swank hotels seem to suit him!

New phone, new platform

I got an HTC Shift 4G last week to replace my dying Palm Pre. Granted, it’s not the most cutting edge phone out there, and in fact, Engadget didn’t deem it worthy of a review. But there’s a lot to like. Like my Matrix live wallpaper!

First of all, let’s get the descriptions out of the way, for those of you who have not seen it. It’s an Android 2.2 handset with a slide out landscape keyboard and a screen the size of an iPhone’s. I like the keyboard for longform writing (this post for instance), but I’m also finding the on-screen keyboard incredibly useful for pounding out short responses. There’s a certain amount of activation energy involved in sliding out the keyboard, but once it’s out, I do love typing on it. The keys are spaced out farther than I’m used to, but they have a perfect amount of resistance. In retrospect, the Pre’s keys are too stiff for me, and my fingers would get tired when typing a lot. I do miss the ability to delete a whole word though (by holding option and backspace). That’s genius. I also make use of Graffiti and voice input on occasion (Serena freaked out when I sent her an sms to tell her I witnessed an accident on the freeway 🙂 ).

IE 9 RC out

February 11th, 2011, 5:09pm by Kelvin

Love the way that title looks—Does Microsoft know catchy product names or what?

Anyway, downloaded the new IE9 release candidate—has a nice, efficient UI and seems just as speedy as Chrome. I can see myself using it instead. Although I’m not sure why I would.

Interestingly, I noticed it renders colors a little differently—compare this screencap of IE vs. Chrome displaying the same Flickr photo. IE’s is a bit warmer (more red) and noticeably brighter. Odd right? Jake, do you why this is?

We decided to donate Lucas’s old shoes and thought we’d document how far he’s come 🙂

Tablet Wars or Massacre?

February 1st, 2011, 11:46am by Jake

Saw the news bit about Samsung not really selling 2 million Galaxy Tabs, and then the bit today about the 16% return rate for the 7″ tablets. The Xoom and Playbook are getting a lot of buzz right now, will be interesting to see if either can fare better than Samsung. Of course, there remains a dark horse in this 1-horse race, staring up from the deepest, darkest chasm of despair.

Will the battle be joined by Motoroloa, RIM, Samsung or HP/Palm, or will Apple run roughshod over the tablet market the way Microsft dominated PCs for 2 decades and the iPod rules the mobile music market?
