Image stitching on the iPhone

September 25th, 2010, 7:34am by Mike

Just wanted to upload this photo I took last night on the Grand Place here in Brussels, which is an auto stitched panorama of 6 photos taken and processed on the iPhone. There was a concert going on, which made the lighting pretty crazy across the photo. It came out really nice, and i honestly can’t see where it merged the shots (helps that it was a night shot, I guess).

Also excited to upload the photo from the iPad in a cafe with free wireless! I’ll put a resized version below, click for full resolution photo on Flickr.

Here’s the Flickr link.

Now that sounds like a nice trip so far!! Sitting in a cafe, sipping coffee, listening to free music, & switching between your iPod & your iPhone! How did you get the image from your iPhone to your iPad? Or did you upload from Phone to flickr, then wrote this pest from iPad? Either way, good thing you had it with you.

The camera connection kit includes an adapter that allows you to plug your camera directly into the iPad, and it also works with iPhones!

(Written from a different cafe. Also, didn’t see your poster, I’ll swing through again and do a more concerted search.)

Now that I see it on the computer, vs the iPad or iPhone, I can see that the background is lighter near the bell tower, so I guess it’s pretty clear where some of the borders are. Still did a great job with the detailed facade of the building. Maybe the algorithm for overlaying the pictures works better when there are more features to match up?

New Sony cameras have a sweet feature that lets you sweep the camera (w/o clicking the shutter) across a scene & it immediately creates the panorama, and even tells you which direction to swing the camera. Very cool.

Yeah, we have a friend who has one of those, it’s pretty cool. The only thing is that (in our very limited playing with it), you can only sweep in one direction (i.e., horizontally), whereas this panorama was more like 2 rows x 3 columns.
