Disappointing
September 6th, 2010, 9:44am by MikeWent to the mall yesterday for a couple of things, one of which was to try to convince Joanie that it’s time to upgrade her iPhone 3G to an iPhone 4. We went to the Apple Store, and walked over to the table where you could try out FaceTime, thinking that would be a fun new feature. First pair of phones we tried couldn’t connect, and when we finally got them to connect, one of them wasn’t capable of switching between the front and back cameras as advertised. We moved down the row to some more phones, and eventually had to try four separate phones before we found a pair that seemed to work correctly. When it finally worked, it was kinda OK.
Then we started to play with the camera. It turned out that the photo album was exhibiting a bug that I’d read about — when you go to view pictures, they appeared to be missing from the camera roll, and instead, there was a black box in its place. Also, when we took a picture, it out about 3 replicates of the photo throughout the camera roll. Something totally buggy going on.
Suffice it to say, Joanie was not impressed, and we didn’t wake out with the iPhone that we likely would have bought on the spot. Apple’s got a little work to do to convince us that the iPhone 4 is worth it. My own personal theory is that this is Apple’s last-ditch effort in the fight against jail breakers — make a crappy product so that people are afraid to void their warranties by jailbreaking.
