Lucas on the Pre and iPhone 4

Honestly, I agree with Jake that the colors are slightly more accurate on the Pre (warmer) than on the iPhone and the increase in pixel density (~200 vs 300 dpi) did not seem noticeable to my eyes. That said the iPhone4’s screen is gorgeous and a HUGE improvement over the 3GS’s. It must have 24 bit color (to match the Pre), and the color depth is probably as important as the pixel density in how much better the screen looks. Elsewhere, the camera takes great pictures from what I can tell, is super fast, and would absolutely suffice instead of a point-and-shoot for most occasions (the exception being, of course, when you need that 12X zoom. Or a 2X zoom, for that matter). The 1G Nano-inspired form factor feels great in the hand, it’s very solid feeling, and damn quick. Easily the best iPhone ever made :).

Stopped by the Apple Store today on the way home and checked out the iPhone 4. It’s definitely nice, and I couldn’t reproduce the reception issue despite my most sincere effort. I wasn’t as blown away by the retina display as I expected to be, but thought the camera was pretty awesome (very fast, and the flash was actually helpful).
As far as I’m concerned this is 1.0 Apple Hardware, though, so the rule is to wait a bit and see how it works out in the field (let things like the reception issue come to light on other people’s phone), and as somebody who often throws their phone into their back pocket, then sits down, I’m a little worried that the glass front and back won’t be all that forgiving. Still, as soon as there’s a solid jailbreak for the iPhone 4, I’ll probably jump on.
