Testing Video, Part Deux

March 4th, 2010, 11:50pm by Mike

Jake tried to embed a YouTube video in his last post, and even though the site seems to be set up to embed the video, it didn’t work (strangely, it didn’t even linkify the URL). My first thought was that it was his blogging client, and Lance pointed out that my troubleshooting may not have worked because I tried to embed videos in a comment.

So, let’s see what happens when I try several different ways to embed a YouTube video, like Jake did:

…and the same from Flickr:

Wait a Second, I'm a sugarbowl!

Wait a Second, I'm a sugarbowl!

Did anything work?

** EDIT, 5 March. Trying what Lance suggested below. Using the syntax didn’t work, and when I use the WordPress post editing tool (rather than my blogging client) and insert the video using the method described on that page, it looks like HTML:

Didn’t work. The ones above that appear as links were inside [embed][/embed] tags, but they clearly didn’t embed. Hmm.

Dang. Wonder if there could be some firewall issue?

Never mind the fact that I’m still up at 1:40am, but have you tried using the syntax referenced on this page? http://en.support.wordpress.com/videos/youtube/

@Jake: In theory you could be right — there are lots of things blocked on the firewall, but I can’t figure out why it would need any access through the firewall to generate the embed code. Besides, can’t easily fix that while I’m out of town. If I have time later I’ll try from my other blog, which theoretically would have the same issues (it’s running an older version of wordpress, though).

@Lance: Yeah, it looks easy. I tried that (above) to no avail. And according to that page, you should be able to embed videos into comments as well (your question from the previous post).
