HD Streaming from Netflix comes to XBox 360
October 29th, 2008, 11:10am by KelvinPretty extensive review of the XBox OS update posted on Engadget today. It enables streaming of Netflix’s Watch Instantly queue, as previously discussed. Newly revealed, however, is that a limited number of the movies are available as HD resolution streams (only 300 of the 10000 titles available). Coming to a console near you on Nov 19.

It looks like Lifehacker isn’t so sure that Netflix’s official Xbox client is better than the vmcNetflix, a 3rd party solution…

it’s a totally different beast, IMO. VmcNetflix requires a mediacenter computer (and a Vista one at that) to transcode the netflix video in real time and stream it to the XBox, whereas the new XBox client talks directly to Netflix. there’s probably a much bigger audience for those that do not want to keep a PC on all the time and tied up in transcoding. I kinda think his complaints are a bit superficial.

So how do I browse the whole “Watch Instantly” library without signing up? It might be worth $5/month to get that service… the hardest decision will be whether to watch on the XBox or on the TiVo.

Oh, now I see you have to get the $9/month plan to get unlimited “watch instantly” viewing. Not as compelling.

Don’t you still get some amount of “Watch instantly” with the $5? A limited number of hours?

2 hours. Which is worth not worth anywhere near $5/month.
