Our week here in Brazil is almost over. We’re here with our friends Andrea and Thomaz, and have had a great time seeing Sao Paulo, the beach in the Northeast (Porto de Galinhas), and the historic town of Olinda. More details when I get back, just wanted to make the first-ever pyslent post from below the equator! I think we’ve got 4 continents now!

Treo 755p

March 30th, 2007, 2:06pm by Jake

Apparently, the lightly-rumored Treo 755p (have we even discussed this yet?) has been spotted “in the wild,” according to Engadget. They claim it’s lost 2 of the launch keys on the front side, but the picture doesn’t seem to bear that out, at least in relation to the 700p. There’s definitely no antenna, we’ll see about lighter & thinner. No radical changes, really, nice to see that it didn’t take 2 years for the incremental upgrade. They claim the camera is better, so hopefully that picture wasn’t taken with a 755p– looks more like it was taken with a Treo 600! I mean, c’mon! How hard is it to focus on a still object?

Time to go home!

March 28th, 2007, 10:24pm by Kelvin

My officemate was due for a computer upgrade, so the suits bought her a Vista machine. Unfortunately, one of the programs she uses wasn’t compatible with Vista. As luck would have it, I had a relatively new XP machine, and I was more than willing to switch with her :).
Anyway, I just started playing with the Dashboard-like Sidebar features, and installed this Windows Local Live “gadget,” which displays a traffic map at all times. I’ve been waiting 3 hours for my side of the bridge to go “green,” so as Cartman would say, “Screw you guys, I’m going home!”

Nice license plate I saw in the parking lot at Best Buy a couple weeks ago (Click for larger version). It’s a little askew since I took it over my shoulder while driving past (there’s no warning on the Treo camera that it shouldn’t be used while driving — only on Google Maps).

Apple TV Is Coming

March 21st, 2007, 8:58pm by Kelvin

New display being put up at the local Apple Store. Has it really been over 6 months since it was first announced? Anyway, it still seems like a good, if expensive, way to unleash all that DRM content trapped on some people’s PCs.

Catalina Marathon- Full Report!

March 20th, 2007, 1:18am by Jake

Lining upThe Catalina Marathon was held on St. Patrick’s Day this year, and the luck of the Irish was with the runners as the day dawned cool & foggy. This was helped in part by the shift in Daylight Savings Time, as the race started just minutes after the 7:01 AM sunrise. As the dark began to lift, I spotted what would turn out to be the only buffalo along the course all day. I snapped a few pictures before the race started, but it really began much sooner than that.
(For future reference, here are shortcut links for the race itself, the pre- & post-race activities, other shots from the weekend, and a smaller best-of collection. Enjoy! Plus the Catalina Marathon on my other blog.)
Read on for lots more.

4:28 at Catalina Marathon!

4:28 at Catalina Marathon!

Just a quick update for all my loyal readers & viewers. The day dawned
completely foggy & cool, and it stayed that way through mile 16. The course
was actually tougher than I thought, with about 10 sections that required
walking up the steepest part of the hills. Still, it was a great race. I
covered the first half in about 2:18, and actually picked it up and ran the
second half in about 2:10, mostly thanks to a crazy 1500 foot descent from
mile 23 to the finish where I averaged about 8 minutes per mile I felt
pretty good, and it was just about a perfect race. Beautiful course and
lots of enthusiastic runners, Catalina Marathon definitely lived up to its
billing. Here I am somewhere near the midpoint of the course. Stay tuned
for more shots from the course.

Countdown to Catalina Marathon

Countdown to Catalina Marathon

It’s less than 12 hours now until the start of the Catalina Marathon.
Here’s the line outside the Catherine Hotel in Avalon as the runners wait
in line to get their bibs & boat tickets. With over 4000 feet of ascending
and 4000 feet of descending, it will be a very challenging race. The
weather outlook is excellent, and i’m hoping to see some buffalo while
running on the dirt roads. I’m psyched. Oh, check out the Flickr stream if
you want to see a few more of the sights my from Catalina trip.

Free Starbucks Drip Coffee

Free coffee at Starbucks today. Somehow, I don’t think Kelvin needs the Starbucks locator.

Lucky Streak

March 14th, 2007, 5:47pm by Kelvin

Serena and I won the grand prize at a raffle held at a local baby-supply store last night (a free infant car seat). Here’s a link to the store (promotional considerations).
Anyway, the lucky streak continues! I just won a copy of some Windows Mobile backup software at my new favorite WinMob blog, WMExperts (somehow affiliated with TreoCentral. I was Mr Day 19. Here’s my winning entry, which was selected at random from the comments to the contest thread:

I had a Treo 650 (Palm OS) and made periodic backups using BackupBuddyVFS (which backs up all my data to the memory card), but I hadn’t made a backup in a few weeks. I dropped my Treo while at the gym, and the LCD cracked into a million pieces. Of course, that meant that I was no longer able to navigate the OS to make a current backup. To make a long story short, I ended up having to buy desktop backup software, so I could backup my data without on-phone intervention. Good thing too, since I later lost my Treo 650 completely, and it turns out that the SD card backup is pretty useless in that situation too.
