If They Build It, Jake Will Come

July 30th, 2005, 11:22am by Mike

The new Apple Store in Manhattan Beach, that is. Grand opening is today at 10 AM. Here’s to hoping that Jake can snag one of those ultra-exclusive t-shirts (first 1000 in the door get the opportunity to sell them on eBay wear them with pride). I think I’ve categorized this post appropriately.

HP iPod No More

July 29th, 2005, 8:13pm by Jake

In some barely-news, HP has announced it will stop selling HP branded iPods. You can read about it at Engadget, at MacNN or dealnews. Has any other story every made all 3 of Pyslent’s newsfeeds at once? Sad news for fans of HP iPods.

Other side of PacBell

This picture was taken from the park across McCovey Cove from the BallPark. It’s a really nice evening in SF.

Motorola phones

July 26th, 2005, 4:18pm by Jake

Lots of news about new Motorola phones lately. First up is the Rokr, which I guess is some sort of music phone but not the iTunes phone. Got that?
Next up is the so-called RAZRberry (pictured above), the Motorola Q Smartphone. Wider and arguably taller than the Treo (but a heckuva lot thinner), this is supposed to be Motorola’s Blackberry killer. It’s got a 320×240 screen (not a touch screen) with a jog-wheel and a d-pad, I doubt it’s anything like that– the killer part of the Blackberry is the software, not the hardware– but looks decent nonetheless. Curious what Derrick thinks since he’s both a Blackberry user & was interested in the RAZRs previously. It’s not due out until next year (hopefully it doesn’t end up like the MPX), which means that Palm and Research in Motion have plenty of time to improve their flagship products before then. What does everyone think?

Roomba Vs. Montana

July 24th, 2005, 1:52pm by Kelvin

Sounds like a Godzilla movie! Click here to download this avi of Montana’s first encounter with our new Roomba Red (only $100 at Home Depot). Mike, how are you and Joanie liking your Roomba?

Condo Photo Galleries

July 24th, 2005, 5:59am by Kelvin

Now that Derrick and Emily has upstaged us with their own housing purchase, I’m not gonna bother making the multimedia web production that I’d originally envisioned to display pictures of our condo :). Click a room on the above floorplan to see pictures of that room.
You can get a sense of how the bamboo floors really changed the look and feel of the condo compared to the original carpet/tile. I’m particularly proud of having the foresight to ask the floor installers to tuck speaker wire (for my rear surrounds) underneath the floorboard. In the family room photo set, there’s one picture showing how the baseboard moldings were notched to allow the speaker wires to come out (that part of the baseboard is now behind the TV)– that was an original design that I sketched out for the installer on the back of an envelope!

Pyslent on Treo

July 22nd, 2005, 8:41pm by Mike

We made it back from Italy, and one of the things that was tough there was keeping in touch. Even with the Treo, loading up web pages took a little time, and even the middle-pane-only version of The Board was a little slower than I wanted, and wasn’t in that great a format.
To solve this, I just threw together what I think is the best way to view The Board from a Treo — it shows the title and relevant info of the “active posts” (the ones on the front page), but not the content (click through for that), as well as the last 10 comments, so you can see if there are any new comments. Since there’s only text, it loads quickly, and lets you choose what you want to look at. Check it out (even in a web browser on a computer) and let me know what you think. It’s currently the home page on my Treo.

GPS in Massachusetts

July 21st, 2005, 2:00pm by Jake

Here’s a GPS map from my run in Beverly while visiting the family. As you can probably tell from the map, the GPS doesn’t work as well in woody New England as it does on the wide-open streets of Palos Verdes, Manhattan Beach or Venice Beach. I’ll add some notes to the Flickr version eventually to point out some of the highlights.

New iMac for Mom

July 16th, 2005, 10:53pm by Jake

After far too many hours of troubleshooting her computers, my Mom has decided to buy a Mac. I tried to convince her to get the mini, but for some reason she thought she needed an iMac; I don’t think she needs one or even “needs” one, but oh well. I got her a really good price on the 17″ iMac Superdrive from Amazon– lists at $1495, $55 for 2-day shipping, -$24 for A9 discount, -$50 for using the Amazon credit card, and -$100 with a rebate, about $1375 total. About $250 less than it would cost at the local Apple Store. Read on for more.

I just picked up the last copy of a new book at LAX. I wonder how long it’s been here- seems like a very odd book to buy at an airport.
